Ever had a queasy morning that made the whole day feel off? Ginger is an old kitchen standby for that, and researchers have taken a close look at it.

What it may do for you

Ginger has the strongest track record for nausea. Harvard Health says it has a long history as an effective and safe treatment for nausea and vomiting. The National Institutes of Health adds that research shows it may help with nausea in pregnancy. It is less sure about nausea from chemotherapy or after surgery.

What about sore knees? The same NIH page says ginger supplements might help symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. But much of that research has been of poor quality, and ginger rubbed on the skin has not been shown to help. So treat it as a maybe.

Ginger taken by mouth can cause stomach discomfort, heartburn or diarrhea in some people. Start small and see how you feel. Harvard Health suggests easy ways to eat it, like grated fresh ginger in a stir-fry or ginger powder, which keeps well in the pantry.

Good to know

If you take any medicine, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using ginger or other herbal products, since some herbs and medicines interact in harmful ways. Ask before trying ginger supplements.
