Breakfast should be quick and cheap. Eggs fit both, and they give you protein, but many of us still wonder if they are safe for the heart.

What it may do for you

One large egg has about 6 grams of protein and 72 calories, according to Harvard Health. Eggs also contain choline, plus the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, says Harvard's Nutrition Source.

Many of us grew up hearing that eggs were bad for the heart. The worry was cholesterol, and one large egg yolk has 200 mg. Harvard Health explains that your liver makes most of the cholesterol in your body. It adds that saturated and trans fats in the diet mainly push the liver to make more. In studies that followed hundreds of thousands of people for decades, those who ate up to one egg a day did not have higher rates of heart attacks or strokes.

What goes on the plate beside the egg matters too. The Nutrition Source says that for most people, the mix of fats in the diet affects blood cholesterol more than the cholesterol in food does. Think of a plain egg as one small brick in the wall. Bacon, butter and white toast add more bricks, and Harvard Health links them to higher heart disease risk. Eggs with vegetables or whole grain toast build a better wall.

Blu Dot surpasses 2,000% ROAS with self-serve CTV ads

Blu Dot used Roku Ads Manager to drive incredible results for its furniture sales event. Its strategy hinged on custom audiences and retargeting, where intent was strongest.

“Roku has been a top performer,” said Blu Dot’s Claire Folkestad. “We have seen…CPMs lower than any other CTV partner we've worked with.”

Try this today

Scramble one egg with a handful of spinach and a few chopped tomatoes this morning, and skip the bacon.

Good to know

In large studies, heart disease risk was higher in people with diabetes who ate one or more eggs a day. If you have diabetes, heart disease or high cholesterol, ask your doctor how many eggs fit your plan.
