If you can’t remember your last glass of water, your body may not remind you. After 50, thirst can get quieter, and that’s worth knowing about.

What it may do for you

Think of thirst as a fuel gauge that has gone a little sticky. MedlinePlus, from the National Institutes of Health, says some people lose their sense of thirst as they age, so they don’t drink enough fluids. A simple habit can do the job your thirst used to do.

NIH MedlinePlus Magazine calls about eight glasses of fluids a day a good general rule, and says we may also become less aware of our thirst as we age. It adds that the right amount depends on your age, activity level and climate. Water is the best choice, and juices, herbal teas, and fruits and vegetables with lots of water in them can help too.

Needs can rise. MedlinePlus lists diarrhea, vomiting, heavy sweating, fever and not drinking enough as causes of dehydration, and advises extra fluids in hot weather, during exercise and when you’re sick. The page’s plain advice is to drink enough water every day. It also suggests going easy on sugary drinks and caffeine. MedlinePlus also says certain medicines might make it even more important to have plenty of fluids, in its guide to nutrition for older adults.

Good to know

The right amount of fluid differs from person to person. If a doctor has asked you to limit fluids, follow that advice. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before changing how much you drink.
